Curriculum
 
Class teachers in each year group plan work together with reference to the schools vision and values, policies and the requirements of the EYFS and National Curriculum. In this way we aim to provide a curriculum with continuity, progression, breadth and balance, creativity and equal opportunities.
 
The EYFS Curriculum covers 7 areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
The National Curriculum covers: English, Maths, Science, Information and Communication Technology, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Art, Music and Physical Education.
 
We believe first hand experience to be a fundamental part of learning. Children learn best when they are interested in and excited about what they are doing and are able to see some relevance in it for themselves. We view the curriculum as a whole learning experience and links between subject areas are made wherever possible. The curriculum at Gordon Primary School is regularly reviewed to make sure it addresses the needs of the children.
 
Children are taught using a variety of teaching styles - individual, group or whole class teaching - depending on the subject and stage of development of each child. A focus is given to Speaking and Listening to help with children’s language development. All children are taught Phonics daily using the ‘Letters and sounds' scheme of work. They are regularly assessed to ensure they are in the correct ‘Phase’ group.
